Abstract: Studies on the role of neurotransmitters in the effects of agents used in the treatment of depression provides increased options for clinicians. Focus is made on the new, safer classes of antidepressants, and tricyclic compounds and monoamine oxidase inhibitors are excluded from the discussion. The clinical and basic properties of current pharmacologic agents indicated for the management of depression are the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the norepinephrine dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs), and the serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). The most important therapeutic issue is continual reassessment and dose adjustment with the ultimate goal of remission. In this respect, it is useful to understand the correlates between a medication's primary neurotransmitter effect and its observed clinical effects.
