| Abstract: | This article presents suggestions, strategies, and practices to help clinicians manage treatment for depression into remission, monitor the remission, and prevent relapse. Clinicians should evaluate the effects of currently used antidepressants in terms of the actions of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine and their potential effect on individual patients. In assessing patient response to treatment, best practice recommends use of a standardized scale or a visual analog to monitor individual patient response to medication management. Educating patients is recommended to manage routine acute side effects. This increases compliance, and simultaneously decreases the possibility of abrupt discontinuation. |
