Abstract: Drawing on the predictions of self discrepancy theory (SDT; Higgins, 1987, 1989), we proposed that particular combinations of a new discrepancy-type 'between self-aspects of relational partners' are central to relationship cognition, such as perceptions of intimacy and trust, as well as to the emergence of roles within relationships (Robins & Boldero, 2003). While relational ought discrepancies are proposed to be related to agitation-related interpersonal emotions (e.g., anger) and relational ideal discrepancies to dejection-related interpersonal emotions (e.g., defeat), we predicted these links are moderated by relationship type. Drawing on Fiske's (1981) relationship typology, we proposed that in some relationships individuals cope with these negative emotions by transforming the relationship into one in which the other is viewed as either necessarily superior or inferior to the self (i.e., authority ranking, leader or follower, relationships) or by adopting a shared perspective (i.e., viewing the relationship as one of communal sharing). These propositions were tested. Two hundred and forty-five students reported about a particular relationship that was typified by one relational model. Consistent with the predictions relationship type moderated the relationships of ideal relational discrepancies with weakness and ought relational discrepancies with anger. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
