Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of why young children can make perceptual distinctions that they cannot yet match in their copying behavior. The phenomenon is described as it occurs in two modalities the difficulty in imitating differences In speech sounds that can be discriminated in hearing, and the difficulty in making distinctive drawings of forms that can be discriminated visually. Three kinds of explanation are examined, one having to do with idiosyncratic matching cues, one with object constancy, and the third with the number of discriminated attributes Each explanatory principle is evaluated in terms of its adequacy in accounting for "lag" in both the visual and auditory modalities.
