Abstract: A summary is presented on an article published online at http://dx.doi.org/10.1126/science.aao5213 examining how signaling through Toll-like receptors in macrophages and/or monocytes participates in infection- and inflammation-associated cytopenias.It speculates that macrophage activation syndrome, a complication of viral infections associated with acute cytopenias and of rheumatological diseases, could be the result of inflammatory hemophagocytes which also drive severe malarial anemia.
