| Abstract: | Given the potentially powerful (complementary) evidence that sensor technology, wastewater, and registry data can provide, but also considering current challenges and limitations of these methods documented in the papers included in this Special Section, we look forward to seeing future studies in this area. Second, sensor, wastewater and registry data can be a powerful source to provide additional information to complement self-reports. We are optimistic that, by combining sensor technology, wastewater, and registry data with self-reports we will gain a more comprehensive understanding of substance use behaviours, event-level contextual factors and relevant harm outcomes. For more than a century, most information on personal substance use have been collected by asking participants to report their behaviour retrospectively in questionnaires [1].
