| Abstract: | Psychoanalysis in medicine: applying psychoanalytic thought to contemporary medicine: by Paul Ian Steinberg, New York and London, Routledge, 2021, 229 pp., £29.99 (Pb), ISBN 978-0-367-14405-0 Paul Steinberg's book, based on over 40 years of experience as a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, takes as its main theme 'that psychoanalytic thinking can be applied in clinically useful ways to the provision of medical/surgical care and the work of family physicians and all specialist clinicians, who inevitably need to deal with psychological aspects of their patients' condition and management of the latter'. Steinberg asserts the potentially crucial role of a psychoanalytically informed approach to the assessment of patients deemed emotionally vulnerable by virtue of a known past psychiatric history (or by what is known of their early personal history) when such patients require a significant medical/surgical or psychiatric intervention.
