| Abstract: | This article reports on the study that examines the factor pattern of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) for a sample of 151 neuropsychiatric inpatients which includes 97 men and 54 women. While increasing attention has been focused on the relationships between psychometric estimates of cognitive ability and neuropsychological indices of higher cortical function, a necessary first step in constructing a satisfactory model of these relationships often has been ignored: In each domain, latent trait analyses of the instruments need to be performed in order to have at hand satisfactory descriptions of the vectors that organize performance. Thus, determining the structure of, for example, the WAIS in a wide variety of populations becomes all the more important. |
