Abstract: Misogyny becomes the dark underbelly - a reaction formation of sorts, holding the otherwise powerful Mother captive in a less-than-powerful (subordinated) place, in and by a world that is felt to be inhospitable and, often, menacing and dangerous.[3] Our authors offer here a number of ways of thinking about the intractable problem of misogyny. According to Dr. Oppenheim, misogyny reveals "not only the pathological origin of all prejudice and discrimination - the anxiety before the uncanny, before ambiguity and the ill-defined - but the reward to be reaped in circles of the like-minded: approval and relief from dread". "In conformity with its peculiar nature, psycho-analysis does not try to describe what a woman is - that would be a task it could scarcely perform - but sets about enquiring how she comes into being.".
