Abstract: Addiction issues have rarely been seen as a priority in palliative care. Yet unmanaged substance use can make the diagnosis and treatment of pain and psychiatric symptoms difficult, if not impossible--managing substance use aims to relieve or prevent such suffering stemming from drug use. The major societal problem of opioid use disorders and overdose highlight that those around the patient need to be protected from the diversion of medications intended for the patient. This article should clarify how definitional, assessment, and management issues will prove helpful to patients, their caregivers, and the professionals charged with their comfort.
