Abstract: In cognitive interventions, PTSD patients learn to use more situationally appropriate appraisals, e.g. via traditional cognitive restructuring (Resick et al., [17]), appraisal bias modification techniques (Woud et al., [21]), or meta-cognitive strategies (Wells & Sembi, [20]). Based on Uusberg et al.'s ([18]) framework, the observed pattern of dysfunctional appraisals in trauma survivors suffering from PTSD may be the result of difficulties related to different types reappraisal strategies in sub-groups of individuals. Reappraisal plays a central role in theoretical models of emotion regulation (ER) (e.g. Gross, [11]), and is often regarded as a prominent example of a functional ER strategy.
