Abstract: The article views that the potentially addictive label for nitrous oxide may do more harm than good for people. It points out the absence of evidence on the reinforcing effects of nitrous oxide and a clear mechanism underlying neuroadaptation to chronic nitrous oxide exposure and the absence of epidemiological analysis on the link between chronic nitrous oxide use and dependence criteria. It suggests that adding the label addiction may add to stigma and reduce treatment seeking.
