Abstract: Students in master of social work (MSW) degree programs, who are disproportionally females, may find themselves avoiding clients who have committed acts of sexual harm--disproportionally males who have sexually abused females. However, to successfully ameliorate the problem of sexual abuse, it is necessary for the social work profession to interact with all those affected by it, including those who perpetrate the abuse. This article highlights the heterogeneity of male youth who have committed acts of sexual harm (YSH) and discusses risk factors associated with committing these acts, including trauma and mental health conditions. Learning how to properly assess, build rapport with, and treat YSH may reduce the stigma associated with having committed an act of sexual harm and alleviate the anxiety that some MSW students may experience when confronted with this population.
