Abstract: Research suggests that communal violence constitutes an integral component of human social cognition under conditions in which in-group membership is highly desirable and uncertain for most in-group members. However, little remains known about the effects of social conformity dynamics on moral decision-making under these conditions. In this study, we adapt the Asch paradigm to study these effects in a cohort of cadets at the Czech University of Defence. The data suggests that social conformity dynamics strongly affect moral decision-making (rpb =.564, n = 87) and may be stronger in males than females. These findings highlight the need for specialized training programs to provide military personnel with the mental tools to recognize, deter and resist communal acts of unjustifiable violence.
