Abstract: Black and Latino/x young men in alternative schools face inequitable educational experiences and outcomes due to structural racism and carcerality, which emphasize punishment and incarceration over restorative and transformative justice. Racist and punitive school policies and practices are traumatic and hinder their academic achievement, psychosocial development, and health and well-being. Radical healing, the ability to navigate between resistance to oppression and the pursuit of liberation, is a theoretical framework that can empower alternative school personnel to use strategies that address the root causes of the educational debt Black and Latino/x young men are burdened with. It focuses on 5 domains (i.e. critical consciousness, cultural authenticity and self-knowledge, radial hope, emotional and social support, strength and resistance) that aid students in healing and transforming their lives, schools, and communities. This article explores the educational experiences and outcomes of Black and Latino/x young men, introduces the radical healing framework, and offers strategies for fostering it in alternative schools.
