Abstract: The article discusses the integration of promotion and prevention focuses in the learning processes related to cultural competence, particularly through the lens of primate behavior. It highlights the ALPs model, which emphasizes the importance of both positive and negative aspects in acquiring cultural competence. The commentary draws parallels between human cultural learning and the behaviors of chimpanzees and bonobos, particularly focusing on how immigrant females navigate their new communities under potentially hostile conditions. The author argues that much of cultural competence acquisition in these primates appears to be prevention-focused, aimed at minimizing risks and negative outcomes rather than enhancing positive experiences, suggesting that this may reflect characteristics of our common ancestors.
