Abstract: Background: People diagnosed with mental illness experience discrimination accessing and utilizing healthcare. Individuals within this group often belong to other stigmatized groups, questions exist whether this discrimination is solely because of this diagnosis. Understanding differing social locations and their intersections for people with mental illness will illuminate potential opportunities to address discrimination and the subsequent disadvantages they experience. Aim: A scoping review of published studies to identify, describe and understand existing research that has used intersectionality when exploring mental illness and experiences of healthcare. Data sources: Four databases were searched for evidence-based articles published up to January 2024 where mental illness was the study focus, and intersectionality was applied as a theory and/or approach. Results: Nineteen published studies were included in this review. An analytic framework previously developed by the authors', ascertained intersectionality was either identified as a theory and/or framework or construct in all studies. Seventeen studies focused on or reported findings related to access, utilization, and/or experiences of mental health care. All studies identified people with multiple disadvantaged status experience more discrimination and have poorer health outcomes than those with privileged or singularly disadvantaged social status. Conclusions: This scoping review demonstrates that intersectionality offers a useful way to interrogate the disparities that exist for people in relation to mental illness, understand the drivers of this inequity, and ultimately advocate for change. Adopting intersectionality in research ensures dimensions of difference are studied and particularly how the intersection of these dimensions impacts on context and experiences.
