Abstract: This study examines the effects of communication savoring interventions on state optimism, state positive affect, and state negative affect across past, present, and future temporal orientations, testing a general confirmatory prediction of savoring benefits, with orientation-specific patterns examined exploratorily. Experiment 1 (N = 180) employed a mixed factorial design to investigate past- and future-oriented communication savoring through reflective writing tasks. Both interventions significantly increased state optimism relative to the control group, with gender included as a covariate due to baseline differences. Only future-oriented savoring significantly increased state positive affect; past-oriented savoring did not differ significantly from control, and the two savoring conditions did not differ significantly from each other. All groups showed significant reductions in state negative affect, with no significant between-group differences. Experiment 2 (N = 80; 40 dyads) used a multilevel design to examine present-oriented communication savoring during real-time dyadic interaction. With gender as a covariate, the intervention significantly increased state optimism and state positive affect within groups, with between-group differences emerging for state optimism only. The intervention also significantly reduced state negative affect relative to the control. Post hoc content analysis suggested manipulation effectiveness: savoring groups exhibited more communication savoring types and strategies across both experiments. Dampening strategies showed no significant between-group differences in Experiment 1 but emerged exclusively in Experiment 2’s experimental condition. These findings demonstrate that communication savoring consistently enhances state optimism across both experimental paradigms, while affective outcomes show implementation-specific patterns reflecting distinct cognitive and emotional processes engaged across different intervention contexts.
