Abstract: The article discusses the critical state of global fisheries, which are vital for employment and nutrition for billions of people, and the impact of harmful subsidies that promote overfishing. The World Trade Organization's Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (Fish 1), effective from September 2025, aims to address these issues by prohibiting subsidies for illegal and unsustainable fishing practices.
