Abstract: Deconversion involves withdrawing from intellectual, experiential, emotional, and moral involvement in religiosity. Young people disconnect from their religion because they assume a more rationalistic view of life, experience personal struggles, and develop suspicions about religious institutions. Less is known about the direct relationship between deconversion and different dimensions of well-being, and potential mediators related to oversexualization and body image. Recognizing the importance of this topic, the aim of Studies 1–2 was to verify how deconversion relates to the well-being of young people through oversexualization and body image. In Study 1 (N = 291), the Adolescent Deconversion Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale, and the Adult Oversexualization Questionnaire were used. In Study 2 (N = 342), the Adolescent Deconversion Scale, the Body Image Questionnaire, the Brief Screen for Depression (BSD), and the Direct Behavior Rating-Scale Items Scale were used. The results obtained in both studies largely confirmed our hypotheses, showing that deconversion correlated significantly with life satisfaction, overcommitment in seduction, sexualizing one's appearance, sexualized language, overall adult oversexualization, dimensions of body image, as well as anxiety and depression. The results of Studies 1 and 2 demonstrated how the relationships between deconversion and positive (life satisfaction) and negative (anxiety and depression) indicators of well-being are likely to emerge within the mediating role of oversexualization and body image. They expand our knowledge of the mechanisms explaining how and under what circumstances faith abandonment can result in worsening well-being among emerging adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
