Abstract: This article examines the evolving relationship between theology and science, critically evaluating three untenable approaches: theology or science (separation), theology from science (subordination of theology), and theology above science (subordination of science). Engaging with the works of Michael Buckley, Ian Barbour, Paul Tyson, and others, it highlights the risks of subsumption in both directions. Drawing on Bernard J. F. Lonergan's philosophy of self-appropriation, the article argues that genuine engagement requires a unity-in-distinction—preserving the relative autonomy of each discipline while fostering responsible dialogue. By emphasizing a shared search for understanding, Lonergan's generalized empirical method is presented as a philosophical framework for cross-disciplinary collaboration that resists both conflict and reductionism. This approach offers a philosophical foundation for interdisciplinary engagement, preventing epistemic compartmentalization while affirming the integrity of both fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
