Abstract: The article examines the impact of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) on the discipline of psychology in UK universities, highlighting the evolution of research evaluations over the past 40 years. It discusses how the REF influences funding and institutional reputation, revealing biases against qualitative research methods in favor of quantitative approaches, particularly in the context of the UoA4 (Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neuroscience) panel. The authors conducted a topic modeling analysis of nearly 10,000 journal articles submitted to UoA4, finding that submissions with a higher proportion of qualitative research received lower quality assessments.
