Abstract: This client study illustrates the challenges and opportunities in developing a humanistic and trauma-informed stance in the context of working with an asylum seeker presenting with difficulties indicative of complex posttraumatic stress disorder. Drawing from evidence-based practice, experiential and cognitive-behavioral interventions were collaboratively chosen as the most appropriate approaches to alleviate the client's suffering. Cultural issues influencing the psychotherapeutic process were considered in the specificity of the client's presentation as well as the sociocultural and political therapy context. Exemplifying humanistic practice, metacommunication was utilized as a dialogical therapeutic process where collaboration was the vessel to renegotiate the client's goals. Therefore, this client study highlights the importance of respecting clients' self-determination and the therapeutic relationship. Public Significance Statement: This article aims to delineate counseling psychology as a socially just and trauma-informed practice. Anchored into a humanistic ethos, counseling psychology translates into a commitment to cultural responsiveness in considering power dynamics and intersectionality. Beyond diagnoses, humanistic practitioners can convey an "unbounded" understanding of their clients' realness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
