Abstract: This article focuses on the psychoanalytic treatment of Israeli survivors released from captivity after being abducted to Gaza during the October 7, 2023 attack. Drawing on data from a training group of experienced psychoanalysts, the authors describe the unique psychological challenges faced by these survivors, including severe trauma, dissociation, loss of identity, and acquired helplessness, as well as the complex dynamics of transference and countertransference in therapy. The treatment setting was often unstable and nontraditional, requiring adaptive and novel psychoanalytic interventions to support the gradual reactivation of basic mental functions and the reconstruction of fragmented identities. The article highlights the ongoing impact of collective and individual trauma, the influence of Stockholm syndrome, and the need for long-term, flexible therapeutic approaches to address the survivors’ profound psychological wounds.
