| Abstract: | Musical creativity is intertwined with gene-culture coevolution and permeates every aspect of musical expression, including instrumental mastery, performance, composition, and spontaneous improvisation. Recent advances in neuroscience research have illuminated the neural mechanisms underlying the diverse creative processes that fuel this unique human endeavor; however, the relationship between brain functional network characteristics and musical creativity is unclear. The present study aimed to reveal the potential link between resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and musical creativity. To investigate this potential connection, we utilized the Creative Achievement Questionnaire (CAQ), a self-assessment tool, to evaluate the level of musical creativity in 542 participants. Individuals with musical creative achievement had enhanced functional connectivity (FC), primarily within the default mode network (DMN). This finding reveals the functional brain mechanisms underlying individual differences in creativity in music, and has potential applications in arts education, cognitive development, and many educational systems that support creativity.
