Abstract: Due to the increasing frequency of emerging adults (18-29 years) entering counseling services, there is a growing need to attend to the mental health needs of this population. To better understand the present state of counseling research on emerging adults, we completed a comprehensive 25-year content analysis across 26 professional counseling journals, resulting in a sample of 506 total articles. The research team analyzed publishing patterns, research methodologies, and theoretical frameworks across the articles, finding that the majority of articles focused on emerging adults within the college context and were highly studied in relation to work/career topics, as well as counseling tools.
