| Abstract: | The article focuses on the factors associated with the success of KIPP Academy Lynn Charter School in the city of Lynn, Massachusetts. The mission of the school is to create an environment where the students of Lynn will develop the academic skills, intellectual habits and character traits necessary to maximize their potential in high school, college and the world beyond. There are four essential elements in KIPP's record of success: high quality instruction, emphasis on character development, focus on results and more time on task. Test results in Lynn on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System suggest that many middle school students have not yet acquired basic academic skills and knowledge. At KIPP Academy Lynn, emphasis is given on fundamentals. The curriculum of the school is designed to push students to build on the rudiments, as they explore increasingly more complex and abstract topics. Teachers at KIPP Academy Lynn use the interests and cultural backgrounds of the students to plan instruction. |
