Abstract: Objective: Explore the biochemical and psychosocial factors involved in obesity and mental disorders and investigate correlations between these factors and the academic performance of medical students. Participants: 181 Mexican undergraduate medical students. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study; medical students were evaluated through biochemical and psychological tests (PHQ-9, EUBE, GAD-7, and PSS-14). Student academic performance was determined through their grades. Results: Regarding mental health, 35.9% of the subjects presented with anxiety, 20.4% depression, 56.4% burnout, and 33.7% stress. Both depression and burnout were more frequent in women than men, and elevated glucose levels were correlated with anxiety and stress (p < 0.05). Greater BMI and (%) body-fat were observed in subjects with anxiety (p < 0.015). Academic performance was lower for subjects with mental health issues (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: The present study demonstrates a correlation between specific biochemical and metabolic factors and medical student mental health, which is likewise associated with student academic performance.
