Abstract: The doctrine of cessationism traces back to the medieval and early church periods but gained prominence in the sixteenth century with the Protestant Reformation and continued in later centuries. Historians have suggested cessationism had influences on later skeptical traditions such as the eighteenth-century movements against miracles and the Enlightenment. Less attention has been paid to the relationship between cessationism and evolutionary thought. This article investigates this relationship and argues against the extremes of (i) the lack of any substantial influence and (ii) straightforward, linear influences where skepticism of miracles is taken merely to imply a naturalistic origins of the world. Instead, cessationism provided various theological substrates upon which several significant evolutionary arguments and traditions were developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
