| Abstract: | Background: Commercially available acidic beverages have the potential to degrade dental restorative materials, providing valuable insights for clinicians to counsel patients on enhancing restoration longevity and clinical performance. Aim: To evaluate the effect of three commercially available acidic beverages, i.e. Coca-Cola, Thums Up, and Sprite, on the microhardness of a nanohybrid resin composite over time. Materials and Methods: Forty disc-shaped specimens (n = 40) of nanohybrid resin composite (3M ESPE Filtek Z350 XT) were fabricated and polished using sandpaper. "Baseline microhardness values (Day 0) were recorded using Vickers microhardness tester. Specimens were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10 each): artificial saliva (control), Coca-Cola, Thums Up, and Sprite. Each specimen was alternately immersed for 5 s in 25 mL of the assigned beverage and then in 25 mL of artificial saliva for another 5 s, repeating the cycle ten times daily. After each cycle, the specimens were immersed in artificial saliva for 24 h. This procedure was carried out daily for 28 days. Microhardness measurements were recorded on days 7, 14, 21, and 28. Statistical Analysis: The data were subjected to statistical analysis using One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results: Three tested acidic beverages significantly reduced the surface microhardness of the composite, with the most pronounced decrease observed after 7 days of immersion. Conclusion: Among all groups, specimens immersed in artificial saliva consistently showed the highest microhardness values. Among acidic beverages tested, Coca-Cola induced the greatest reduction in surface hardness, followed by Sprite and Thums Up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
