Abstract: Older people are at the center of the affordable housing crisis and should be integral in developing innovative solutions to meet the growing demand for affordable and accessible housing. However, age-related assumptions can lead to this population being overlooked as potential collaborators and drivers of innovation. In this pilot study, we examined the usefulness and feasibility of a university-based intergeneration al co-creation event focused on fostering intergenerational relationships and developing creative solution ideas for community partners. The Intergenerational Design Challenge (IDC) took place at a mid-sized university in the Southeastern United States, involving nine older adults and seven university students. To evaluate the event, we collected post-event survey data to explore changes in self-reported affinity and ability to collaborate with peers and members of different generations. Additionally, we analyzed short-answer responses from participants to gain a deeper understanding of their feelings about working on an intergenerational team, their solution ideas, and the event overall. Findings from this pilot effort suggested that an IDC can be a useful way to support intergenerational relationships and collaboration. Solutions developed by the intergenerational teams have been and continue to be shared with other agencies and community constituents, suggesting that an IDC event can also provide a valuable way for older people to play an active role in developing innovative solutions to challenges that directly impact their lives.
