| Abstract: | We examined how junior secondary students' perceptions of visual arts integration in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) lessons relate to their creative problem solving and critical thinking. Students at a public middle school (N = 600) completed self-report scales to assess their creative problem solving, critical thinking, and perception of visual arts integration. We analyzed the data in R using descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlations, and multiple regression. Perceived visual arts integration showed moderate positive correlations with both creative problem solving and critical thinking, and significantly predicted both outcomes after controlling for gender and prior visual arts experience. Results suggested that students who experienced STEAM lessons as more (vs. less) visually and artistically rich saw themselves as better able to generate original solutions and think critically. The findings add to growing evidence that arts-integrated STEAM environments may support important cognitive outcomes in early adolescence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
