Abstract: The article demonstrates mechanisms for deep earthquakes. Deep earthquakes occur, exclusively in thin, planar zones that begin beneath oceanic trenches and angle down into the mantle. The theory of plate tectonics tells us that these locations mark subduction zones, where the cold uppermost layer sinks into the mantle.
