Abstract: The article discusses the Great Earthquake and subsequent fire that destroyed San Francisco, California in 1906. The magnitude-7.9 earthquake which began at 5:12 a.m. on April 18 is thought to have killed more than 3,000 people. The tremor happened in the right time and place to act as catalyst to make seismology a national priority.
