Abstract: The article discusses the historical evolution of sex therapy. The author presents a contextual history of major trends in sex therapy, particularly medical, behavioral and psychoanalytic models. The author also provides details of the contribution of family therapy to the field. Furthermore, the author states that the substantial change in sexual attitudes and behaviors was influenced party by the movement for equality among women and gays and the increasing number of women in the workforce. The author implies that sexual dysfunctions may be a manifestation of the individuals's difficulty to deal with stress.
