Abstract: The article discusses how to manage risks associated with facial transplantation. Risks fall into two categories, perceived and real. Perceived risks include such problems as identity crisis; such fears can be addressed with education efforts. Real risks include graft failure. Patients should be well screened both medically and psychologically to determine if they are good candidates and they must be prepared to deal with loss of graft. Patients should be worked closely with to ensure social rehabilitation, drug compliance, and long-term partnership with their medical teams.
