Abstract: The article discusses the choice for athletics coaches between playing to win and playing to develop the players. Coaches who wish to maximize the benefits of team sports must wisely manage the tension between coaching to win and coaching for learning by reflecting on the developmental needs of young and older athletes and understanding what leads to athletic excellence. The author presents a developmental model to understand competitive decision-making among coaches and assist coaches in making well-informed choices.
