Abstract: The article presents a retrospective cohort study of the incidence of cancer in patients who received blood from donors with subclinical cancer at the time of donation. The donors were diagnosed with cancer within five years of donation. The article covers information in Swedish and Danish databases between the years 1968 and 2002. Among 354,094 transfusion recipients only 3% were exposed to blood from precancerous donors. The study found that there was no extra risk of cancer related to the receipt of precancerous donor blood.
