This article offers information on paediatric HIV infection. It is estimated that 1500 children are infected daily. In developed countries, well established prevention programmes keep the mother-to-child transmission rates at less than 2 percent. In developing countries the infection rate is 25-40 percent as interventions are available to only 5-10 percent of the women there. This article focuses on the clinical and immunological features of HIV that are specific to children and the challenges ahead to ensure that all children have access to treatments that have proved successful in developed countries. |
