Abstract: This article presents the third installment on transfusion medicine examining the use of coagulation factor concentrates. Clotting factor transfusions are vital for patients with diseases such as haemophilia. In response to the many people infected by HIV and hepatitis C, a virus-free factor concentrate was created through a combination of improved donor selection, effective virucidal technology and recombinant protein expression biotechnology. These cleaned up the supply of coagulation factor concentrates but there are still therapeutic challenges including the transmission of prions and other pathogens, the formation of inhibitory alloantibodies and high costs. It is expected that bioengineered recombinant proteins that have been modified will be used more often in clinical practice.
