Abstract: The article presents the results of a two-center clinical trial to determine whether taking the drug celecoxib can retard or prevent restenosis in patients who where implanted with paclitaxel-eluting stents during coronary angioplasty surgery. All patients received aspirin and clopidogrel daily, while half also received 400mg of celecoxib daily. After six months, stent luminal loss was lower in the group receiving celecoxib, with a lower incidence of secondary events including cardiac death or myocardial infarction due to a reduced need for revascularization of the target lesion. The authors conclude celecoxib is a safe treatment after stent implantation in patients with coronary artery disease that can reduce the need for revascularization of the target lesion.
