Abstract: This article presents the results of a clinical trial of the RTS,S/ASO2D candidate malaria vaccine in infants in a highly infected area of Mozambique. Malaria is a huge global health problem and efforts to wipe out the disease have not been successful so the introduction of new control methods are needed. The vaccine RTS,S specifically targets the pre-erythrocytic stage of the Plasmodium falciparum and has show complete or partial protection in adults. This study wanted to see how effective the candidate vaccine would be in infants with the intent to register the vaccine for use in children living in endemic malarial areas. The study found the RTS,S/ASO2D vaccine to be safe, well tolerated and immunogenic in young infants which allows for phase III trials on the vaccine.
