Abstract: This article presents the results of a study to see if long-term lipid-lowering therapy with fenofibrate could reduce the progression of diabetic retinopathy and the need for laser treatment in diabetic patients. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of vision loss in adults with type 2 diabetes and the normal treatment is with laser. While this treatment works on slowing the progression of the disease it has some ocular side effects. The study found that laser treatment was needed more often in patients with poor glycaemic or blood pressure control and in those with microvascular disease. Treatment with fenofibrate was found to reduce the need for laser treatment but does not seem to be related to blood lipids.
