| Abstract: | This article reports on a study looking to see if a single treatment with tenofovir and emtricitabine might be able to be added to the dose of nevirapine given for the prevention of HIV transmission during labor to poor women in developing countries. Nevirapine is the normal treatment but it has been shown to produce a resistance to other non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor drugs. This study wanted to see if the drugs, administered during labor, would reverse the adverse effects of nevirapine without compromising its effectiveness. The study found that the single dose of tenofovir and emtricitabine at delivery reduced drug resistance by half at 6 weeks after delivery and the authors suggest it should be added to the nevirapine therapy. |
