Abstract: The article presents the future of coral reefs as a result of rapid climate change and ocean acidification. It is pointed out that there are dire consequences for reef-related tourism, fisheries, people and coastal protection. Data on global atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature from the Vostok Ice Core study are employed to investigate the ocean temperature and concentration of carbonate ions. It is pointed out \ which result in atmospheric carbon dioxide above 500 ppm are very risky for the coral reefs and the people who directly depend on them.
