Abstract: The article presents a randomised, controlled study which assessed the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of eltrombopag on platelet counts and bleeding during the treatment of chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). The efficacy of a dose increase to 75 mg was also examined. Adults with platelet counts less than 30,000 per µL of blood and one or more previous ITP treatments received standard care plus eltrombopag 50 mg once a day or placebo for up to six weeks. After three weeks, patients with platelet counts less than 50,000 per µL could increase dosage to 75 mg. Researchers found that eltrombopag is an effective treatment for managing thrombocytopenia in chronic ITP.
