Abstract: The article presents a study seeking to determine if an adjuvant treatment with imatinib mesylate would improve recurrence-free survival following resection of localized gastrointestinal stromal tumor. The methods of the randomized controlled trial involving patients who had complete resection of a primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor at least 3 cm in size is described. Researchers found imatinib significantly improved recurrence-free survival in patients compared to the placebo group. The findings indicate adjuvant imatinib therapy is safe and effective in improving survival after resection of primary gastrointestinal stromal tumor.
