Abstract: Reports on the detection of upwardly propagating atmospheric neutrinos by the ice-based Antarctic muon and neutrino detector array (AMANDA). Definition of neutrinos, which are elementary particles that carry no electric charge and have little mass; How neutrinos can pass through enormous amounts of matter, thereby having the potential to convey astrophysical information from the edge of the Universe and making them hard to detect.
