| Abstract: | The Middle School. High Road or Dead End? John Burrows. The Woburn Press, Totowa, New Jersey. 1978. 232 pp. The author maintains that the first middle schools in Britain have now been operating for nearly 10 years, but most of the great mass of them have come into being since 1970. The middle school is a very controversial subject, and educators are far from agreed as to their performance and potential. Some of the questions discussed in this book are as follows: Do they represent a new approach with genuine and stimulating initiatives? Why are they rotund only in some areas? Who decides where they shall be located? is their performance being evaluated? Are they helping children to forward leap in their education? The author has been the Chief Inspector most closely concerned who has now retired; so he is in a position to know about the Middle School. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
