| Abstract: | The need to teach students effectively is a commonly agreed upon goal for schools. Questions immediately arise, however, in any discussion beyond this point. What is "effective"? How can this goal be achieved? Is it even possible to achieve it? The effective schools concept defines "effective" and provides guidelines which many schools are following in successfully attaining the goal of increased achievement scores. Although few educators discount the need for student achievement, many have voiced concerns regarding the definitions, roles, and methodologies advanced by the effective schools proponents. This paper presents an overview of the effective schools concept and relates feedback from the faculty and staff of one elementary school in the initial stages of implementation. It concludes by raising concerns regarding whether the effective schools concept is in reality an effective way to help schools make the differences they wish to make. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
